Responsible for the delivery of a 20-year pipeline of major infrastructure projects at the Sellafield site, Programme and Project Partners (PPP) recently launched a new video series titled Manufacturing Excellence. Featuring interviews with our Managing Director Steve Rothwell and Operations Director Tom Atkinson, the two-part first episode takes a deep dive into our involvement in the Sellafield Product and Residue Store Retreatment Plant (SRP) project currently being delivered in our High Bay facility in Chorley, Lancashire.
We are responsible for the manufacturing and testing of two glovebox lines for the new SRP facility, which will repackage over 30,000 special nuclear materials (SNM) packages for long-term safe storage. The first glovebox line recently underwent factory acceptance testing (FAT) and is now in a period of integrated works testing (IWT). This IWT phase will see the gloveboxes fully assembled and powered up before undertaking close to 400 operational tests to demonstrate the functionality of the equipment prior to installation at the Sellafield site next year.
SRP is one of Sellafield’s largest infrastructure projects and, once commissioned, will safely receive special nuclear material packages from existing storage locations across the Sellafield site before retreating and repackaging them into new 100-year packages for safe storage. The SRP facility will enable all special nuclear materials to remain safe and secure in its store into the next century and beyond and therefore plays a key role in delivering Sellafield’s purpose to create a clean and safe environment for future generations.
